An ovulation calendar will show you the days when you are ovulating which will help you increase your chances of getting pregnant. Your menstrual cycle length is the number of days between the first day of your menstrual period to the first day of your next menstrual period. An average number is 28 days, but anywhere between 21 and 35 days is normal. Ovulation is a release of a mature egg from an ovary. It usually occurs 14 days after the first day of your menstrual cycle. After ovulation, the egg can be fertilized for up to 24 hours. You have the best chance to conceive during ovulation. Your fertile period starts about 3-5 days before ovulation, and ends about 24 hours after it. A sperm can live in your body for 3 to 5 days, and an egg can live for 24 to 48 hours after being released. You are most fertile on the day before and the day of ovulation. Shettles Method: Calendar based Gender Selection

To understand how the Shettles Method works, we first need to clarify the qualitative differences between the X and Y chromosome-carrying sperm.

The Y-chromosome sperm (boys) have been found to be smaller and faster than the female X-chromosome sperm. However, Y-chromosome sperm may be less resilient than X-chromosome sperm, may die more quickly, and may not be able to withstand more acidic environments (pH levels of the vagina). Boy sperm live fast and die young, so to speak.

The X-chromosome sperm (girls) have been found to be slower but more resilient than the Y sperm. X-chromosome sperm are larger and are more capable of enduring vaginal environments where the pH levels are more acidic. Typically, the vagina and cervical environments become less acidic right before and during ovulation, due to the increased presence of cervical mucus. The reproductive function of cervical mucus to provide a healthy medium for sperm to swim and survive (longer). Cervical mucus will also likely reduce the acidity of the vagina and create more alkaline pH levels, helping sperm survive longer. We'll see below how this may play a factor in the Shettles Method of gender selection.

Boy sperm live fast and die young, so to speak. Girl sperm are like the tortoise in the Tortoise and the Hare children's fable: Slow and steady still wins the race. The Shettles method suggests that certain vagina environments, sexual positions, and dates of intercourse (timed in relation to ovulation) will favor one sperm over the other, based on the sperm attributes described above.

So now we understand the premises underlying the Shettles Method. This, however, is only one-half of the equation. In order to implement the Shettles method, we need know when you ovulate during your cycle. Predicting ovulation accurately is the key to success in the Settles Method, as timing intercourse is the cornerstone of influencing your baby's gender.

Timing and Frequency of Intercourse: Timing sex is the key to the Shettles method. To increase the odds of conceiving a girl baby, it is recommended to time intercourse daily from the end of your period up to 2 to 3 days before you anticipate ovulation to take place. This method favors the slower but larger and more resilient X-chromosome sperm (girls). X sperm will fair better than Y sperm in a more acidic vaginal environment when cervical mucus is not yet quite "fertile".

To conceive a boy, its recommended to time intercourse directly prior to and during ovulation. This means commencing with sex no earlier than 24 hours before ovulation. Having sex the day you ovulate is also crucial. The fast but less "durable" Y-chromosome sperm are favored when cervical mucus is fertile, like egg-white, and the vagina is less acidic.
